Lawmakers in Texas, USA have been warned of the potential health and safety risks posed by gay rights ‘glitter bomb’ attacks, as several anti-gay laws hit the state legislature this week.

Glitter bombing is an act of protest in the United States in which activists throw glitter on people at public events. Glitter bombers have frequently been motivated by their targets’ support of anti-gay legislation.

In an email forwarded to legislative staffers on Thursday, a Department of Public Safety captain in Texas warned of “glitter bombs” being sent to state lawmakers and attached a document titled “Glitter Bombing: Weapon of Choice for Gay Rights, Pro Choice Advocates.”

The email goes on to list several prominent politicians who were glitter bombed, and says, “The common denominator among these political figures is a conservative orientation and opposition to gay rights, especially marriage equality.”

Also contained in the message is some helpful information on some of the less commonly known health hazards associated with the handling of glitter such as irritation and infection of the eyes, nose, lungs or other soft tissue. Who knew?

It continues “Although glitter bombing as an offense has yet to be codified, some legal officials argue glitter bombing is technically an assault and battery.”

Pro-gay group Texas Wins told the Texas Tribune: “Our ‘weapon of choice’ to end ugly discrimination against hardworking gay and transgender Texans are core values – like opportunity and freedom. Glitter is not one of them.”

Websites such as – www.ruindays.com/ have popped up online to facilitate the sending of such parcels to people they feel deserve the annoyance of a small but messy spray of glitter.
