Leading gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has given his support to an equal marriage protest at the DUP conference on Saturday called by the Fight4Equality campaign.
An activist since 1967, Peter has been involved in fighting for LGBTI rights in Britain and across the world. In 2007, he was beaten up and arrested for attempting to take part in a Pride parade in Moscow. Earlier this year, he spoke at a conference in Belfast organised by Fight4Equality on the global fight for LGBTI equality.

Peter said:
“The legalisation of same-sex marriage in England, Scotland and Wales represents a historic step forward in the fight for equality. It is hugely disappointing – if not surprising – that the so-called ‘Democratic’ Unionist Party has blocked the extension of the same rights to people in Northern Ireland, against the wishes of both the majority of MLAs and a large majority of the public. The key to forcing them to accept our democratic demand is a united and determined campaign of people power. I call on everyone to join Saturday’s protest to send a clear message to the DUP that they will not be allowed to sabotage the drive for LGBTI equality and human rights.”
